So get the stuff that is really important to you off the disk first then worry about making recovery disks afterwards.

It gets stuck after the 'set up now' button is pressed and won't go past 'set up is starting' with the cursor whirling. what she suggested was me taking the old hdd to outside shop and get it done. I hit enterand the files are loading now as they did before, so I'll see if it goes past the blank screen and cursor stage.
