Web Server Setup Guide (3/3)
Auhor: Mike Kaminski
Date: November 24, 2003
No Need For Eye Candy
Det er afgørende at reglerne om ægdonor opblødes, så det fremover bliver. Since the server will only be used for administrator use, eye candy doesn't really matter. What I mean is that you don't need apps like ThemeXP, heavy graphical desktops, visualizations, or desktop themes. All of this is deadweight and if your server is rather slow, every little portion not using CPU clocks or memory space helps.
Don't Use Un-Needed Software
Software which has no use or is irrelevant to server functions should not be installed; this goes for spy ware as well. All versions of Microsoft Windows come with an Add/Remove applet, which can be used to remove stuff such as Solitaire, WordPad, Themes as well as 3rd party applications you've installed. Embryoadoptie embryodonatie is een vergeten mogelijkheid.
Disable Services
Windows Services are programs which run in the background on Windows 2000 and XP systems, even if you don't need them. Considerable memory space can be regained by just disabling everything irrelevant, which should be plentiful in a server environment.
Schedule Defragmentation Sessions
A fragmented hard drive hinders any system because the drive takes more time to retrieve requested data. While a less mission-critical home server may not totally benefit from a regular defragmentation, it can do no harm. If you wish to schedule this task, set it during a time when access from outside Internet users is at its lowest usage. You can find the task scheduler in the System Tools directory. Disk Defragmenter is located in the system32 directory under C:\WINDOWS.
Local or Remote Virus Scanning
Any network, large or small, should be scanned for viruses. A trojan or worm virus on a single machine can raise hell and disperse itself all around the network and cause data loss and corruption. Virus scanning with programs such as Norton or McAfee can be scheduled to run at any time. A good idea would to run a virus scan once a week on each computer. The best part for lazy folk is that most virus scanning software has support for scanning over a broad network.
Security
I have had the misfortune of accidentally leaving a firewall disabled on my gateway machine for almost 24 hours unknowingly, and a friendly Nimda worm, which propagated itself all over my machine, greeted me. Luckily, none of my data was lost and the virus scan was able to clean the 2000+ infected files. Basic security requires common sense. For instance, don't choose a password that is your first name, your dog's name, or the name of your car. Mnemonic passwords are the best way to go.
If a port is opened on your firewall, make sure some service or application is occupying that port. Otherwise, a gaping hole will be left open for script kiddies to exploit. A port scan will easily identify any vulnerable ports.
Dynamic DNS
If your server is without any sort of domain name, users will be forced to remember an extensive IP address. Domain names are more human friendly and don't change. However, the IP address of your server may. Dynamic DNS services allow a redirection from a domain name to a dynamic IP address. Free services will allow you to use a http://xxx.somefreeservice.net address while a premium service hosts an independent domain name. There is a small software applet download, which constantly connects to the main server that is installed on the server. Every time the sub domain/domain is entered, the user will be automatically forwarded to your IP address. I recommend DynDNS who offers free and premium services for many types of users. Der Eizellen embryonenspende ist bei Einsatz dieser Verfahren verboten.
Free Email
If you've even had an inkling to manage email for you and your friends, it can be done quite simply with a Windows or Linux installation. Pegasus Mail is a free, simple mail server application for Windows. Again, you may want to have a dynamic DNS set up for email accounts.
Test Server Speed
Bandwidthplace.com has a free service which tests the efficiency of server downstream speeds. (Server to client) This test will give a good indication on your server's capabilities.
Wolfenstein - Enemy Territory Dedicated Server
You've undoubtedly heard of the latest first person shooter from Activision called Enemy Territory. To catch up for the initiated, Enemy Territory is a free multiplayer game based on events occurring in 1940's Europe. The official RTCW web site offers versions of Enemy Territory for both Linux and Windows platforms. Unfortunately, there's no standalone dedicated server application, so you're going to need to download the entire game. Trust me, its well worth the wait. Check out the forums to hear about the latest happenings on the WinHQ.Net dedicated ET server.
Conclusion
Thanks for visiting my 3rd installment of the Server Setup Guide. I hope that gave you some insight on the capabilities of your potential new server. I may add some additional information as time goes on, so check back here occasionally. Remember to check out the forums.
